I was reading through the compendium of issues #1-6 of Dungeoneer and saw that you'd contributed a piece about Metamorphosis Alpha, some new monsters, etc. How did you get involved with the Dungeoneer?

When I got a hold of the first Dungeoner magazine I absolutely loved the magazine. I was the very first person to sign up for a subscription. That was just before I went to work for TSR full time so I offered to write some articles for them. Paul Jaquays liked my ideas and printed them all. As I went to work for TSR I was told that I should only be supporting the company magazine and I had to agree.

A shame that you were limited by TSR, but on the other hand it's kind of neat to know that most of the Metamorphosis Alpha stuff can be found in one basic place (Dragon magazine) instead of having to track down fifty different magazine titles with one article in each.

I'm still hoping for an "ultimate 1E" version of MA with the old rules and artwork blended together with all of the information from the various magazine articles. That would be really special!

This may not be a perfect list, but here's what I can find about Jim's contributions to the first 8 issues of DUNGEONEER. Most of the content would appear to be OD&D-based, but looks like two METAMORPHOSIS items -- a review in #4 and an article in #7.

Dungeoneer #2 (Sept 1976)
* Darkness Monster (not MA?)

Dungeoneer #3 (Dec 1976)
* Arcane Elders (fiction; not MA)
* The Ray Gun Robot (monster)
* Mobil Dis (monster)

Dungeoneer #4 (March 1977)
* Arora Energy Monster (monster)
* Monster Bomb (monster)
* Metamorphosis Alpha (review)
* The Pharaoh's Tomb (OD&D adventure)
* Discs of Severen (treasure)

Dungeoneer #5 (June 1977)
* The Arcane Elders (fiction)
* A Change in the Elemental (OD&D)

Dungeoneer #7 (March/April 1978)
* Notes on Metamorphosis Alpha by the designer (with a ship’s level mini-dungeon)

Is there a collection of Dungeoneer magazines? I'd be interested in reading those MA articles.

Yes there is! You can find it on ebay for around $10.00 look up Judges guild. It is a compendium of issues 1-6. I've seen it listed on Amazon as well.

You might take a peek at my post above again before you buy this, however.
1. Note that only two of the articles Jim submitted is actually MA. (There are some scifi OD&D things, but only two MA.)
2. Note that only one of the two is in the 1-6 range, which are the articles covered in the collection. The other MA article was in issue #7.

I have the Dungeoneer Issue 7. I recently saw it being sold on eBay for $90. Heh! I bought it for 85 cents back in the day.

Those old Dungeoneer magazines were sort of quirky. I have #7 and #8 (I think) and they are so tiny. I was a lot happier when they went to standard magazine size.
